Sentry VP Talks About Outdated Indianapolis HOA Covenants and Bylaws in Article Published by Indy Star

Indiana HOA Bylaws

The Vice President of the Sentry Management, Indianapolis Division is quoted in an article titled “HOAs Rain on Homeowners’ Solar Parade” an article that was published by the Indy Star, which is a subsidiary of the USA Today Network.

The article was published in early January and follows a homeowner’s journey to finding a local neighborhood open to letting homeowners add solar panels to their properties.

“With hundreds of Homeowners Associations across central Indiana, a review suggests that as many as 50% don’t allow panels at all, while the others have weak or limiting language that leaves architectural reviews committees to make decisions devoid of objective criteria” the article explains.

Many HOA covenants and bylaws are concerned with the aesthetics of the community which leaves little to no room for the addition of solar panels.

Jane Scully, a Sentry Management Vice President who works with over 60 associations in the Indianapolis area, was able to shed some light on the subject.

“Numerous HOAs are operating under covenants and bylaws that were written as far back as the 1980s and were crafted from boilerplate developer documents,” Jane explains in the article.
